Years and years (and years) ago I had a pal who worked at the National Theatre in London. He rang me one day and said that there was a show that I had to see. He explained that it was a three-hour production of Macbeth in Japanese, which did not sound very promising, but in the end I agreed to go along and saw the most extraordinary piece of theatre that I can remember — more impressive even than the National Theatre of Brent’s production of Zulu!! — with a cast of two.
