ON THE GRID - A ROAD TRIP WITH AN ODD SOUNDTRACK
9 min read time
Setting off from home for the first race of the year by car, it felt very Spring-like. F1 has been here and here around the world in recent weeks but very little time has been spent in Europe. The unruly hedgerows of northern France and the trundling tractors, splattering the roads with mud, getting things ready for the summer crops, are all signs that soon it will be time for the village fetes and, of course, the big excitement for 2024, the Paris Olympics. A few hours later, as I was climbing up through the Jura, heading towards Geneva, the odometer in my old Toyota Prius registered 470,000 km (292,000 miles), which is about 12 times around the world. If the car could fly, it would now be on its way back to Earth after visiting the Moon. In celebration of this moment, it decided that it was time to renounce the quiet life and have a bit of a mid-life crisis and transformed its exhaust note into a rorty torty V8 roar.
