Peter Wright, who has died at the age of 79, was unique. A man of many talents, he was one of the most influential engineers in the history of Grand Prix racing. Having worked out how to use ground-effect aerodynamics and after developing active suspension systems, he went on to be a part-owner of Team Lotus. After the team went out of business he was offered a role as a technical consultant with the FIA — and played a huge role in developing F1 safety — and a great deal more.
