Once upon a time, promoters had to prove they could stage a race before earning the right to hold a Formula 1 Grand Prix. Thus, the first Long Beach “Grand Prix” in 1975 wasn’t for F1 machinery at all, but for US Formula 5000 cars.

As expected, Mario Andretti, Al Unser Sr, and Brian Redman were quick — but the standout performer was another Englishman, Tony Brise.
